Manjanggul Lava Tube is the representative lava cave of the ones on Jeju Island. It is located in Gujwa-eup, Jeju City (East side of Jeju). The lava flows erupted from the Geomunoreum volcanic crater and flowed through creating several lava tubes. Manjanggul Lava Tube is the largest cave an dthe only one that is open to the public among those several ones. It is a large scale, single channel that was formed through the curvy path of the lava flows winding in and out. The cave’s total length is 7,416 meters and as wide as 23 meters at the widest point and 30 meters high at the highest point. The 3 entrances were made from the collapse of the ceiling. Currently, only a section of 1 kilometer is open to the public, from the No.2 entrance to the lava column in the cave. The temperature inside the cave is maintained in the range from 11 to 18 deg C. It is cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Despite its formation around 300 thousand to 100 thousand years ago, the cave’s geological value is very high because the cave’s shape and the microtopography are well preserved, keeping the various styles intact.
In the Lava Tube, the classic features of a lava cave can be seen in various sections with a variety of formations. The hardened lava on the wall is as if it was just formed; the lava flowlines, lava shelves, and the ropy lava are also clearly shown on the cave floor. Various cave formations can be seen in different sections such as lava stalactites, lava helictites, lava columns, and lava flowstones, and lava stone marks. Around 60 some cave creatures inhabit the cave. The upper tube near No.3 Entrance is known to be the habitat for the biggest community of long-fingered bats in Korea. It was designated as the 98th natural monument of Korea in 1962 and it was appointed as a UNISCO’s World natural heritage in 2007. Also for the first time Korea, it was accredited as a Global Geopark in 2010.
